Isla Caña is a beautiful reserve that is extremely popular with the endangered olive ridley turtle. Thousands of these ancient creatures nest on these shores during August and November each year. The thick mangroves and picturesque beaches are perfect for spotting all sorts of wildlife and you can hire a guide to point out nesting sites and other things that alone you'd probably miss.
Getting there
First take one of the hourly buses from Macaracas to Tonosí. From there head down to the mangroves. There will usually be a boat there waiting to take you across. If there's not then you'll either have to wait patiently or head about 50m down stream to a more obvious pickup point. Only do this at low tide or snakes and crocodiles could become a real risk.
