Altos de Campana is Panama’s first national park, established in 1966. It’s spread over an area of 4925 hectares on the Canal’s western slope and has become part of the canal’s basin. The El Valle volcano with its dramatic peaks and expansive lava fields forms part of the landscape that the national park embraces. With a height of 850 m (2789 ft) above sea level from 400m altitude, the landscape around the volcanic mass is a soothing mix of forest and continuous lush grasslands. The mouth of the River Chame has a thick population of birds, but the illegal logging of the forests has led to slow destruction of the wildlife habitat and the ecosystem in the recent years. As many as 500 flora and fauna species including epiphytes, orchids, bromeliads, and moss and over 36 species of mammals have made the park land their home. The crab-eating racoon, two-toed sloth, and three-toed sloth are some of the rare species of animals found in the park.
