Ica is a hot, busy and chaotic city on the Peruvian Coast. It's famous for its wine.
Dangers and Annoyances
At night the streets of Ica can be dangerous. Take taxis to get around or just stay in your hotel room.
Around and closeby
Huacachina is an oasis and resort in the desert a few kilometres from Ica, situated between enormous sand dunes. The oasis attracts many tourists as well as Peru's rich families, due to the variety of adventurous sand activities that are available, such as sand-boarding and sand tours on special sand buggies.
Sightseeing
Not many people know that a short distance out of the city (about 30 km), in the planes of the Ocucaje desert that surrounds Ica, hundreds of whale fossils can be found. They've been there for millions of years. In this amazing and quiet place, at a height of over 600 metres above sea level, ancient whale skeleton fossils were exposed by a slow process of wind and rain. These whale fossils have been there since the era when the ocean still covered the area.
Getting there
Ica is about 4-6 hours by bus from Lima, connections are frequent. To Nazca it is only 2-3 hours.
