UNESCO declared one of the most important archaeological sites in Peru, Chavin de Huantar, as a World Heritage Trust site in 1985. These significant ruins lie just south of Chavin town. The only remains are of a large fortress temple, built somewhere in the 800 BC, which provide an interesting insight into the Chavin culture, which in its days of power is believed to have been influential in the regional spread between Cajamarca and Chiclayo in the north to Ayacucho and Ica in the south. The heritage site is well preserved despite the ravages of time and the fury of nature.
Sightseeing
Some of the major attractions include beautifully carved stone heads and relief designs, depicting influential figures. There are also many culverts and tunnels that are part of an elaborate labyrinth criss-crossing the length and breadth of these structures internally. These carvings are in great condition, though most of the best sculptures are in Uma. Lanzon is a famous dagger-shaped stone monolith, dating back to 800BC, located inside one of the temple tunnels. Some areas of the site are closed to visitors. The galleries, open for public viewing, have electric lights. The guard serves as the guide and has exceptional knowledge about the ruins.
Getting there
You can visit Chavin on a day trip from Huaraz, but it will be a long day for sure!
