Chivay is the gateway to the canyon. Tourists, who opt for the two-day tours in Arequipa, run by most tour agencies, stopover in Chivay for the night. La Clera's hot springs are just 4km away from Chivay. Several large hot pools and showers can be found in Chivay, but only one pool is open for tourists. The waters of the hot springs act as balm on tired nerves after a hard day of trekking. Just as the road from Chivay winds it way to Cruz del Condor, you reach the deepest point of the canyon. Though the view from here is fantastic, people come to see the immense Andean vulture, the Condor, which can be seen gliding high on the thermals, to swoop in surprising close, close enough that you actually feel that you can reach out and touch them. The experience is both humbling and magnificent.
Tourist Offices
The tourist office in the Municipalidad on the west side of the plaza has very helpful and friendly staff; they also give away map of the valley, which are indeed useful. You can also check with the tourist police stationed in and around the plaza for advice about local guides who can take you around the town.
Getting around
You can opt for the public colectivos, available from the market, to reach the springs or you can just take the hour-long, enjoyable walk.
