The Incan town of Maras is famous for its series of spectacular, tiered 'salineras' or salt pans, dating back to the Incan era, that are used to produce salt even today! As it is a popular stopover for tourists be prepared for a congested and crowded experience when you visit this place. The walk to the saltpans is very hot and dry and takes about 30 minutes. Be sure to carry some water or you may get dehydrated.

Getting there
You can make use of public transport from Chinchero to Maras (it is around 46 km from Cusco), and then travel in a pick-up truck that takes people in and out of the town. You will not be able to get any transport between 5 and 6pm, so plan accordingly. If you cannot find transport for Maras, then take a 'combi' that plies between Urubmba and Chinchero, get off at the junction for Maras, and walk for the next 4km from there.
