Puno is a pretty tourist city on the shores of Lake Titicaca on the Altiplano of Peru. The city's biggest attraction is its proximity to Lake Titicaca. It's a great place to buy the lovely, soft alpaca jumpers and other handicrafts. There is a rich tradition of music and dancing here and, as there's a large student population, it's quite a lively town.
Dangers and Annoyances
Walking up in the hills gives nice views over the city and the lakes, but it is dangerous! Locals recommend not to do so since tourists are often the victims of armed robberies in the hills. If you like hiking, take a colectivo to Chuciuto and start hiking from there.
Sightseeing
Visit the Church of San Pedro, the Sistine Chapel of the Americas or floating Islands of Uros. Uros can be reached by buses travelling from Copacabana and stop in Puno. Tours can be organised with bus companies in Copacabana.
Next to the highest mountain (with a thin antenna on the top, 4550m) there is a summit where locals bring sacrifices. Fireplaces, flowers and bottles give witness to that.
Getting there
Trains to and from Cusco travel only 3 times per week. Other trains travel down to Arequipa.
Daily buses depart to and from Cusco and Arequipa, and La Paz, Bolivia on two slightly different routes.
You can also go via ferry boat across Lake Titicaca and Copacabana. You should change some money at the border in order to be able to pay the ferry in Bolivianos. Be prepared to change buses in Copacabana. This will mean you will lose your good seats.
