Canaima is an Aboriginal village, a tourist hub to serve as a jump off point for visiting the Angel Falls. It is spread on a tranquil and extensive stretch of Río Carrao known as Laguna de Canaima, exactly below the point where the river converts into a series of seven spectacular falls. The lagoon water is red in colour and bordered by a pink coloured beach and the waterfalls have a brown/golden coloured water. The reason the water is coloured in this region is due to a compound called tannin found in the Bonnetia trees and other local trees and plants found in the region. The Aboriginals are of the Pemón tribe, about 150 of them live in the south from the camp-site.

Around and closeby
You can reach Angle Falls by boat or plane. Light planes that are usually five seater, come in from Ciudad Bolivar. The pilots usually fly you back and forth over the face of the falls two or three times and also circle the top of the tepui before returning to the airstrip. A roundtrip flight from Canaima takes about 49 minutes and you can arrange the trips with the tour operators or directly with the pilots at the airport. The boat tour is more exciting and more fascinating than flying over the falls. Boats allow you to experience the waterfall from a very different perspective and you can soak in the beauty and magnificence of the waterfalls at your own leisurely pace. The trip by boat is fun, with stunning scenery, especially the Canon del Diablo.

Sightseeing
Most visitors spend time in the camp soaking up the sun on the beach and enjoying the waterfall vistas. The lagoon is wonderfully calm but be careful not to swim to close to the waterfalls as the undercurrents of the falls can be treacherous. You can pick a seat on the motorized canoes that depart from Ucaima above the Canaima waterfalls and travel up the Carrao and the Churun Rivers to Isla Ratoncita at the foot of the Angel Falls.
