Referred to by the name El Valle (The Valley), El Valle del Espiritu Santo is a small town and the spiritual capital of Margarita. It is home of the island's patroness Virgen de Valle. Her photograph is kept in the mock-Gothic church on the main plaza, drawing large numbers of pilgrims from every part of eastern Venezuela here throughout the year, especially on the 8th September, the Virgin's birthday. El Valle is also the first Marian religious sanctuary in both the Americas.

Sightseeing
The ornamental church - Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Valle - looks wonderful with its pink and white colour scheme, It grabs everyone's attention as it stands proudly on the central plaza. Built between 1894-1906 it is the home of the Virgin now. According to lore, the Virgin's image was brought to the town in 1510. Her statue is placed on the right side of the high altar, and is usually surrounded by groups of devotees. The religious stalls next to the church sell rosaries, crafts, amulets and numerous images of the Virgin.
