This national park's territory encompasses a lagoon, a large expanse of mangroves with a matrix of narrow channels at the west end, and a healthy variety of birds such as pelicans, cormorants, and scarlet ibis.

Getting there
You can board a bus at Porlamar to reach the park and take a five-seater motorboat from the pier for a trip along the interconnecting canos or channels through the thick mangroves. You'll be amused to find that the channels have romantic names such as mi dulce amor (my sweet love), tunel de los enamorados (the lovers tunnel) etc. These boats can also transport you to a fine, sandy beach. Though the boat service is pretty regular during high season, you may have to endure long waits or pay more during low season.
