Cerro de María Lionza is the most sacred area and the main destination for pilgrims from across Venezuela. The cult of Maria Lionza is followed throughout the county, and devotees visit the holy mountain all year round, to practice their rites. Weekends are more crowded. Huge scale celebrations are carried out on 12 October, and these draw large crowds.
History and Culture
Cerro de María Lionza is part of a larger mountain known as the Macizo de Nirgua that is thickly forested with a rich variety of endemic species. The Inparques declared this 117 sq km of area as Monumento Natural Maria Lionza in 1960. But this attempt to protect the region did not gain momentum as the religious significance of the place completely overshadows the natural wealth!
Sightseeing
The followers of the cult have constructed many sanctuaries along the northern foothills of the mountains. They visit these before heading up to the mountains' top. A couple of the most important sanctuaries are the Quiballo and Sorte, and both of them have their own altar mayor or high altar - a place where the initial celebrations are performed. After this, the groups head to the temple of their choice, there are many scattered over these woodlands. These temples are the places where the proper rituals and rites are performed. Some of the rites even last through the night or longer and usually include a trance seance.
