The Parque Nacional Yacambú embraces 270 sq km of protected mountain territory known as the Sierra de Portuguesa. The park has undulating geography, with elevation of up to 2200m height. Moreover, it has the only active volcano in Venezuela, called La Fumarola due to the thick cloud of smoke that floats over the volcano. The park provides a natural habitat to many plant species typically found in this Andes region, including many endemic species. To date, 60 types of orchids have been observed. Though the government has not tried to study in detail the fauna, it is understood that the forested area has some amazingly rare and rich species of plants and animals including the oso frontino or the spectacled bear and the jaguar. The park is a haven for bird watchers as well.

History and Culture
Yacambú River is an important source of water for the region and a large reservoir has been built to store the water. Rainfall season begins from April through to November.
