Quibor is a rapidly growing town on the outskirts of Barquisimeto, the state capital. A thriving folk art and handicraft centre, it's well worth a visit to gain an insight into the region's Pre-Columbian, indigenous heritage.

Sightseeing
The town offers a few sights such as the Cementerio Indigena de Quibor, a pre-Hispanic cemetery, located just by the Plaza Florencio Jimenez and discovered quite accidentally in 1965. The archaeologists believe that this cemetery was the burial ground for the elderly in a tribe with aboriginal roots. Over 26,000 pottery pieces have been excavated along with many tombs dating back to the 3rd century AD! This is the most important discovery of its kind in Venezuela. Another site worth a visit is the Ermita de Nuestra Senora de Altagracia, a fortress like church on the northern edge of town. It is believed to be one of the oldest colonial churches and dates back to 1620, the year the town was founded. Another church, Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de Altagracia is named after the patron saint.
