San Fernando de Apure is a city in the Apure State. It was founded on 28th February, 1788, on the banks of the Rio Apure, by Don Fernando de Miyares González. The Eighteenth Century exports included heron feathers (for pens) and animal hides. The town is very relaxed and it's a good base for wild-life watching in the surrounding areas.

Tourist Offices
There is a tourist information office at Calle Rodríguez Rincones, Urbanización Tamarindo, that's open from 8am – 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, closing for lunch. There is also an info kiosk at the bus station.

Sightseeing
Wander along Paseo Libertador to see the local attractions. The Monumento a Pedro Camejo is a bronze statue of the bravest lancers of Bolívars army. Next to that is a lovely waterfall, in front of the Palacio Barbarito. There are a number of other monuments along the way, and if you walk all the way to Plaza Bolívar you'll see the modernised cathedral. This plaza is a nice place to rest your feet as it's pretty and well shaded.

Getting there
There are frequent buses from Caracas and Maracay.
