Bocono is a peaceful and lovely town located close on the bank of the Rio Bocono surrounded by verdant hills and forests. Simon Bolivar aptly named the city - 'Garden of Venezuela'. Due to its fine location on the bank of the river, the city has fertile soil and a pleasant climate. This is the reason that Bocono is famous - for its lush green vegetation and a variety of crops, vegetables, fruits and coffee produce. At a distance of 95km south-east of Trujillo, you reach Bocono via a serpentine mountain road, which provides excellent views of the valley. A prominent craft centre, Bocono is especially famous for its pottery, basketry and weaving.
History and Culture
Established in 1560, on one of the sites chosen for Trujillo, Bocono grew slowly and has remained self sufficient to date. But after the construction of the Trujillo-Bocono road in 1930's, the town became connected with the rest of the country, though it still has an air of isolation.
Around and closeby
The surrounding hills are dotted with charming and tiny towns and hamlets such as San Miguel, Tostos, and Niquitao. Travellers use Bocono as a starting point to visit these places.
Sightseeing
The Ateneo de Bocono is a place where you can experience local weavers displaying their magic in their textile workshops. You may also be able to see arts and crafts exhibitions from time to time. A small distance away from the Ateneo is the Paseo Artesanal Fabricio Ojeda - a crafts market with numerous crafts stands displaying colourful textiles.
Getting there
The bus terminal is located in the southern part of the city. But transport companies have their own offices located across the central streets and you can book your seat on their vehicles from there. Other modes of transport include minibuses, Jeeps, and cars.
