A very pretty colonial town set in a long valley, surrounded by sheer mountains, Niquitao is a spectacular place. With origins dating back to 1625, its history is still present and obviously visible around the Plaza Bolivar. With an altitude of 2000 metres, it has a cool, mountain climate with warmer days and cooler nights. It is also a good base for hiking and trekking the mountains.
Around and closeby
A good day trip option is the Viaducto Agricola, an old iron bridge over the fast flowing Quebrada El Molino. The setting is spectacular and you can even go down about 80metres to the stream for a refreshing bath.
Sightseeing
Trips can be arranged to the surrounding mountains like La Teta de Niquitao, that is towering at the height of 4006metres. Though you can walk to the peak from the town, it's a two-day, exhausting roundtrip. If you want to do it the easy way then you can go up by Jeep, that takes about two-three hours uphill through La Mesitas and the Llano de la Teta, from where you can trek up to the summit in an hour or so.
Getting there
Jeeps take about twelve passengers and service Niquitao from Bocono, taking about 50minutes to 1hour. The frequency is regular
