Trujillo is the 450-year-old capital of the namesake state. It is set in attractive surroundings, with a balmy climate, and eye pleasing colonial architecture, reminding you of an era gone by. It is 35km to the north east of Valera. The city is home to a large and watchful statue of the Virgin Mary who safeguards the people of the town. It’s a great spot to get sweeping views of the city, the state and the mountain range beyond it.
The city has been planned in an unusual way due to its location in a long narrow valley, El Valle de los Cedros. While it is 2km long, it's only two blocks wide.
Sightseeing
There are two parts to the town - the old town, which is also the historical section, and the new town. The old town is located on two parallel streets that run in the east-west direction - Av Independencia and Av Bolivar. The east houses the green Plaza Bolivar, which is the centre of the town and still the heart city life today. The plaza also holds the Catedral that was completed in 1662. It has a charming white façade with some lovely antique altarpieces inside. Some other historical buildings around the main boulevard include the Convento Regina Angelorum- a 17th century convent that has now been converted into a public library. It has a wonderful courtyard as well! As you stroll around the city, you will also spot surviving colonial houses west of the plaza.
