Valera is a mountain town that is also the northern gateway to the Andes region and a jump off point for travelling around the various places within that region. The town's warm and refreshing weather make it a popular destination. Moreover, the fact that Valera is a major transportation hub, it’s easy to find regular buses to other places. Valera also has an airport, the only one in the state.
History and Culture
The mountain is where the action is, but the town is worth a visit too. Founded in 1820, Valera has been growing rapidly after the construction of the Trans-Andean highway that was completed in the 1920’s. The town is by far the largest and prime urban centre in Trujillo state and its population far exceeds that of even the state capital.
Sightseeing
Valera has a Neo-Gothic church, which was built in 1925. Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is the tallest church in the Andes region of Venezuela and its twin towers reach out to touch the sky at 44metres. The interiors of the church are well lit and the large, colourful, stained glass windows are the main source of light.
Getting there
The airport - Aeropuerto Antonio Nicolas Briceno is at a distance of 4km from the city centre in the north-east direction. You can hire either a cab or a minibus from there to reach your hotel.
