Isla Negra is neither black nor an island, but a fishing village some 130km south-west of Valparaíso, Chile, named after the dark outcrop of rocks just offshore. It is best known as the residence of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, who lived there - with long periods of travel and exile - from 1939 until his death in 1973.
Sightseeing
The main thing to see here is Pablo Neruda's favourite house. He built it on a rocky ocean headland between Valparaíso and Cartagena in the 1950s. It was opened as a museum in 1990, keeping his individual taste and spirit. His tomb and that of his third wife are here too.
Getting there
Buses come directly from Santiago and Valparaíso.
